Fun Vacation Ideas in Salt Lake City, Utah

Vacation Ideas for Salt Lake City, UtahHave you and your friends been looking for a great spot to go on vacation with a group of friends? Salt Lake City, Utah may just be the perfect destination for you, that you may have never thought about.

Back during August of 2014, David and a few of his friends decided to take a road trip across the country after they graduated college. We had just met a couple months before he left for his trip.

We talked throughout the month he was away, and he threw out the idea that my friend (who was dating his friend that was also on that same trip) and I should fly out to Utah to meet up with them. My friend met her boyfriend at the same time we met. So, of course, you’re probably thinking: “Did you actually fly out to meet up with someone you barely knew? And, stay with them?” Yeah, it’s crazy. But, another one of those spontaneous decisions that I decided would be so worth it, and it was.

Wakeboarding

Catching some major air from a huge wake.

Utah was a beautiful state, especially during the summer. For the first couple of days we were there, we rented a wakeboard-specific boat to use on Jordanelle Reservoir. You pay for the boats per day and then pay for your own gas, on top of that. The boat cost about $625 for the day and at least one person in your group needs their boating license. If you rent the boat for more than a day, places will often give you discounts. At the time, this was the cheapest option we could find. But, if you are going with a group of at least 6 people, it wound up being about $100/day (We rented the boat for 2 days).

If you’ve never tried wakeboarding or wake surfing before, I highly suggest it! I am by no means an expert at it, but I do believe it’s something you can pick up fairly quick, especially if you’ve ever tried snowboarding or surfing before.

Quick Note:

The guys we went with had brought their own wakeboards, so my friend and I were able to ride those. If you’re interested in renting a boat to wakeboard or wake surf, look into renting wakeboards!

Memorable Moments

David in all of his glory…and a little loopy from pain killers.

We have a tendency to get injured when we’re around each other. I had to get stitches for the first time in my entire life during a trip to Maryland we took. But, moving on, around the second day we were in Utah, David dislocated his hip while wakeboarding. I’m not sure if any of you have ever dislocated something (I haven’t…yet), but I could tell he was in an excruciating amount of pain. That was the first time I accompanied David to a hospital, and unfortunately, probably won’t be the last. He was a trooper though…after about 4 hours, we were back on the water and he hopped right back on the skimboard to wake surf (…he may have had some liquid courage to help with the pain).

Hiking

If you’re a big hiker, you’ll love Utah. One of our friends that lives in Utah brought us to a trail that was near Alta. The area is apart of the Wasatch National Forest and is a protected watershed for Salt Lake City. It was about a 1.7 mile hike to find the gorgeous Cecret Lake. The trail took you up about 400 miles to a 9,875 ft. elevation. The high altitude caused me a little bit of an issue, but besides that the trail was fairly simple with a few terrain obstacles.

Utah Olympic Park

Utah Olympic Park was designated for the 2002 Winter Olympics hosted in Park City, Utah, which is 28 miles from Salt Lake City. In the summer, you can tour the park where you will find a museum, zip lines, skiers doing a big air jump into a giant pool, and rock climbing.

Snowbird

I am so used to visiting ski resorts during the winter. So, seeing a ski resort during the summer, when there’s really no snow around, is such a novelty and treat. Snowbird allows you to pay a fee of $20 for an adult ticket to take the air tram to Hidden Peak Summit. If you love photography and scenic views, I’d suggest this option. Otherwise, there are options to hike to the summit, as well, if you’re looking to save some extra money.
